At Laney College there is a long series of performances under the banner of 'The Laney World Music Series'. The spring 2012 series has begun. The first performance was by Kenny Washington, February 9th, 2012. He is an accomplished jazz singer with a four octave range. He sang with a trio of musicians (piano, upright bass and drums), and answered student questions at length. Tana Sprague is an Oakland based artist and musician who creates complex and interesting electronic music. At a L@TE performance called 'The Moon Part 1'at the Berkeley Art Museum, curated by Land and Sea Records, she performed an excellent set of lunar inspired sounds, delicate, soothing and complex. In addition to her music making she recently co-founded Liminal Space, an artist run warehouse space that hosts residencies, art projects and performances. Here is an excerpt of her performance, and some links for finding more information about some of the things mentioned.

December edition of KICK OUT THE JAMES! All punk rock!

The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment, or MADE, is a new museum in Oakland focused on video games. This is a subject well suited to collection and exhibition - countless individuals collect video games, whether the games of their youth, from before they were born, or brand new, and even more people play them. Collected like any other vintage collectable, video games and consoles have the added benefit of having been designed for play. This is a museum in which the bulk of its holdings are ready to be played, versus a place of precious objects in vitrines. The MADE tries to please both the intense obscurity-loving fan boy and the casual gamer, and the time I visited the atmosphere was very focused on a mix of reminiscing and having fun.

Having raised substantial start up money via a successful Kickstarter and initially slated to be in San Francisco, it has come to life in Oakland in an unassuming office in a nondescript building. It is a large white room with rows of tables each topped with monitors and some manner of video game console (Atari, Dreamcast, Super Nintendo etc.) and computers for PC gaming. They hold classes for kids, and weekly events like a night for ‘fighting games’ (Street Fighter and the like). Their first official exhibition opens this weekend and is centered on the history of 3D in video games. It will be interesting to see this place develop going forward, the people running it are full of energy and are excited about their project; providing access to their collection in a very free and hands-on manner which formal museums could learn a thing or two from.

Gather the family around the laptop, Practice Space #003 is now online! This installment features interviews with three Oakland based bands; SWANN DANGER, SWEET NOTHING and DETACHDOLLS. Episode #3 would have not been possible without the help of Kevin Brown. He has been documenting bands in the Bay Area for several years and has over 500 videos (!!!) posted on his YouTube page. Kevin also plays drums for the bands JACKAL FLEECE and BLACK ICE.

This episode brought a lot of noise to the mix but we will be showing our softer side for Practice Space #004 (all acoustic version) featuring Sean O' Brien, Karry Walker and Mark Clifford. You can watch the show debut on Peralta TV Thursday, December 1st at 11pm.
